Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Youth leadership plays a pivotal role in driving community development initiatives, particularly in the context of organizing local events. Across Nigeria, youth-led initiatives have been instrumental in fostering social cohesion, promoting cultural values, and addressing community challenges. In Gombe Local Government Area (LGA), where the population comprises a significant proportion of young people, youth leadership has emerged as a catalyst for organizing events that unite diverse groups and promote community engagement.
Community events such as cultural festivals, health campaigns, and environmental awareness programs rely heavily on the leadership skills, enthusiasm, and innovative ideas of young people. Youth leaders bring energy and adaptability, often leveraging technology and grassroots networks to mobilize resources and participants effectively (Okafor & Ibrahim, 2023). However, despite the evident contributions of youth leaders, challenges such as inadequate training, limited resources, and lack of institutional support often hinder their effectiveness.
Given the growing recognition of youth as agents of change, it is crucial to assess how their leadership influences the success of community events in Gombe LGA. This study explores the strategies employed by youth leaders, their challenges, and the overall impact of their efforts on community development.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While youth leadership is increasingly acknowledged as a driver of community development, its effectiveness in organizing community events often remains underexplored. In Gombe LGA, many community events fail to achieve their intended objectives due to inadequate planning, poor resource mobilization, and limited community participation. Youth leaders, despite their potential, frequently encounter obstacles such as lack of training, insufficient funding, and minimal support from government and non-governmental organizations. These challenges not only undermine the success of community events but also discourage youth participation in leadership roles. This study seeks to bridge this gap by evaluating the effectiveness of youth leadership in organizing community events in Gombe LGA, identifying key challenges, and proposing strategies for improvement.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1. To examine the role of youth leadership in the planning and execution of community events in Gombe LGA.
2. To evaluate the challenges faced by youth leaders in organizing community events.
3. To assess the impact of youth-led community events on social cohesion and community development.
1.4 Research Questions
1. What roles do youth leaders play in the planning and execution of community events in Gombe LGA?
2. What challenges do youth leaders face in organizing community events?
3. How do youth-led community events impact social cohesion and community development?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
1. H1: Youth leadership significantly contributes to the effective planning and execution of community events.
2. H2: Challenges such as limited resources and training hinder the effectiveness of youth leaders in organizing community events.
3. H3: Youth-led community events have a positive impact on social cohesion and community development in Gombe LGA.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for youth leaders, community stakeholders, and policymakers in Gombe LGA. By evaluating the effectiveness of youth leadership in organizing community events, the study highlights areas of improvement and provides recommendations for empowering young leaders. Policymakers can use the findings to design targeted interventions that enhance the capacity of youth leaders, while community stakeholders can gain insights into how to support youth-driven initiatives. Furthermore, the study contributes to academic literature on youth leadership and community development, offering a case study that can inform similar efforts in other regions.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on youth leadership in organizing community events within Gombe Local Government Area, Gombe State. It does not extend to other LGAs or explore other forms of leadership beyond the youth demographic.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
